Also known as the “Asian pear,” Korean pears are a delicious fall fruit that is grown throughout Asian. This brownish-yellow fruit grows from October to late November or early December in most Asian countries for export. But when you see them in the stores, do you know what to do with them? Let’s talk about these precious little fruits and how to use them.
Fresh Taste
Korean pears are one of the best little known treasures of the produce department. Larger than traditional pears, Korean pears are thought of as a cross between a crisp red apple and a Bosc pear. With a crisp, white inside, these pears are sweet and juicy. The thin brownish skin can be eaten and offers a slight tart taste. Korean pears should be kept in a cool, dry place to store for a couple of weeks or can be placed in the refrigerator for a few months. When picking out your pears, look for fragrant and firm fruits with little to no bruises on the skin. Korean pears bruise extremely easily and are often kept in little nets to keep them from bruising. They are also packaged in egg crate packaging for transportation. Unlike apples or pears, Korean pears do not turn brown when cut, making them ideal for lunches, salads, desserts, or appetizers. With only 50 calories, these imported fruits make perfect snacks to be eaten on their own or in your own dishes.
Eating Korean Pears
While they are wonderful eaten raw on their own, you can pair your pear or even cook it for dessert. Chop up your Korean pears and serve them wrapped in a slice of prosciutto for an appetizer. For breakfast, slice up your pear and put it in your morning oatmeal for a delightful crunch. You can even use them in place of apples in a turkey salad after Thanksgiving.
