Vietnam has a rich culture and history, and it is reflected through their food. You would be hard-pressed to find a more distinct flavor of food or one that is harder to forget. Hallmarks of Vietnamese cuisine are a balance of salty, sweet, sour and hot flavors, which is achieved through the use of special sauces. Herbs are not uncommon, but most dishes aren’t spicy. There are so many different kinds of Vietnamese foods, but here are the top five you must try.
Banh Mi
This is a sandwich that is made on a baguette. It is filled with greens and other choice of filling like pate or a fresh omelette. This sandwich has been frequently imitated but never quite perfected around the world.
Pho
Pho might be one of the most famous Vietnamese dishes as it is the country’s staple. Pho is a noodle soup that can be eaten for any meal but is typically eaten at breakfast. Most Pho bowls consist of a light beef or chicken broth that is flavored to taste with ginger and coriander. Flat rice noodles, slivers of meat and spring onions are typically added while it cooks.
Cao Lau
Cao Lau is a common dish in central Vietnam. This dish is a bowl of thick rice flour noodles, pork rind croutons, and bean sprouts in a light soup. This is topped with thin slices of pork and served with crackers or maybe sprinkled with crispy rice flavor bringing this dish an added dimension.
Mi Quang
This affordable and underrated noodle dish is a specialty in Hanoi. The ingredients can vary by establishment but the base is the same. Mi Quang is simply a bowl of meat noodles that are enriched by the addition of flavorful oils, sprigs of leaves, peanuts, mint, and shrimp.
Bun Cha
Another Hanoi specialty, you can find bun cha at food stalls and street kitchens in Vietnam. This dish is kind of like a small hamburger. These pork patties are barbecued on a charcoal brazier and served with cold rice noodles and other types of greens in a slightly sweet sauce.
